Project Description
The Department of Health Services Harm Reduction Division is implementing a Harm Reduction Health Hub in Skid Row in partnership with Department of Health Services Housing for Health’s Safe Services Campus. The Harm Reduction Health Hub will provide any array of services to people who use drugs, who are engaged in sex work, who are justice system involved and who may be experiencing homelessness. These services include drop in space; mental health system navigation; overdose prevention services; substance use system navigation; light touch case management; light touch health care services; medical respite; and methadone treatment. According to the DPH 2024 Homeless Mortality Report for People Experiencing Homelessness, people experiencing homelessness were 1.7 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than the general public. According to the same report, COVID-19 was the fifth leading cause of death among people experiencing homelessness. The Harm Reduction Health Hub will actively address COVID-19 concerns through the provision of vaccines and medical treatment for COVID-19 infections and will connect high-risk individuals to longer-term, more specialty care. The Health Hub population, reflective of the Skid Row community, are likely to be people of color who experience disproportionately poor outcomes from COVID-19.
