The H. Claude Hudson Urgent Care Expansion project is targeting a February 2025 Board agenda date. The Urgent Care Expansion Project would renovate and expand the existing Urgent Care Center space located on the first floor of the H. Claude Hudson Comprehensive Health Center. The project covers the renovation of 4,000 square feet of existing urgent care space and an additional 800 square feet of ambulatory procedural unit observation space that is being repurposed for the expansion of Urgent Care Services. The total urgent care project after completion will cover 4,800 square feet. This renovation is critical to update and expand the current number of Urgent Care exam rooms available to the community. The current space is insufficient to meet current and projected patient care needs. The Urgent Care Center allows patients to access care when they cannot wait for an appointment with their provider. Since hospital emergency departments are often crowded, Urgent Care enables patients to get care in an easier way for non-life-threatening conditions. Construction work for the project will be provided by the Department of Public Works (DPW) through a contractor. The Urgent Care service provision will be provided by the Department of Health Services. This renovation responds directly to needs highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic exposed the true severity of preexisting disparities in the communities served by H. Claude Hudson Comprehensive Health Center, particularly in terms of access to care and resources for people to take care of themselves. H. Claude Hudson is in Service Planning Area (SPA) 4 Metro LA. According to the Department of Public Health (DPH), this area had one of the largest increases in death rates from 2019 to 2020. This is also a “highest need” area by the COVID-19 Vulnerability Index and surrounded by many neighborhoods designated as “highest” and “high need.”
